Water's running in Branson's Lake Taneycomo - Fishing Report

by Gary Groman aka The Ole Seagull
published: Jan 25, 2007

Jan.25, 2007 In the opinion of an Ole Seagull who has been fishing Branson’s Lake Taneycomo for over 30 years, one of the most important factors effecting the fishing is whether or not water is being generated through Table Rock Dam and how that water is being generated. Water generation information can be obtained on line at http://www.swl-wc.usace.army.mil/WCDS/plots/Web/tab.htm and by calling the recorded message at 1-417-336-5083.

The water generation of the last 12 months or so has kind of spoiled us in terms of the water being off a lot. From my perspective prior to the last 12 months or so, I usually made it a point to be on the water at first light because that represented the best chance for water off fishing. Over the last 12 months or so that pattern completely changed and it was “water off Heaven.” The water was off more than it was on.

All that has changed recently and they are running water most of the time. Table Rock Lake, the source for Lake Taneycomo has dropped from over 917 to 915.8 in a few days and as this is being written 0500 there are three generators on and Lake Taneycomo’s elevation is 707.3. Everyone seems to have a theory as to why the increased generation and if the Ole Seagull were going to go with one it would be that they are just getting back to what the typical generation cycle was prior to the last 12 months. The question that might be more interesting is why the water was off so much during the last 12 months or so?

In any event, until and unless the water generation situation abates the best chance to fish Lake Taneycomo is from a boat. The water being generated the way it is makes it just about impossible and dangerous to wade fish the public access areas of Lake Taneycomo near the dam. For what its worth, the Ole Seagull would bet that fly fishers will catch fish, have a great day, and be guaranteed that they will get to fish if you plan a trip with either River Run Outfitters of Chartered Waters.  For those that aren’t fly fishers Bob Kline and Chartered Waters would be a good bet. Scotty’s Lakefront Trout Dock and Lilly’s Landing also have a selection of guides and boat rentals.

With the weather being like it is, the Ole Seagull being “under the weather” and the change in water generation he has not done much fishing at all lately. The good news is that that lots of others have and the links below, under “Other Fishing Reports” will take you to their reports.

Guide Bob Klein of “Bob's Guide Service– The following standard default techniques produces fish routinely:

Water Off Conditions (not generating power from Table Rock Dam) - Air injected night crawlers or Orange and Chartreuse Power Eggs, with the Chartreuse on shank of hook and the Orange on tip. Fish them off the bottom with no heavier than 4 pound leader, size 8 or smaller hooks, and just enough split shot to cast. Place the shot so that the bait floats 12-18 inches off the bottom. Spin-A-Lures and Little Cleos have been working well.

Water On Conditions - Orange and Chartreuse Power eggs with the Chartreuse on shank of hook and the Orange on tip, white Power Eggs, bubble gum power bait, or inflated night crawlers bounced off the bottom using the standard "Lake Taneycomo Drift Rig." which is readily available at all Marinas and most resorts on the Lake.
